THE ORGANIZATION
Rochester City Ballet, a nonprofit organization established in 1987, is committed to enriching the arts in the greater Rochester community through the promotion, conservation, and progression of the art of ballet. The company’s mission is to create inspiring, entertaining, and educational experiences while providing the highest level of artistic and technical excellence. Known for its versatility and repertoire, which includes award-winning contemporary ballets and masterworks, RCB reaches over 20,000 people each year through performances and community engagement programs throughout the Finger Lakes region.

RCB has a full mainstage season with additional regional appearances. The repertoire ranges from full-length, classical canonical works, such as Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Firebird, Cinderella, and Paquita, to master works by renowned choreographers including George Balanchine, Salvatore Aiello, and Gerald Arpino. In addition, RCB regularly commissions original works by established and emerging choreographers. RCB is committed to making dance accessible through its educational and community outreach. The company offers robust programming with the Rochester City School District, Boys & Girls Club, community centers and colleges, and we produce special sensory friendly productions that allow families with special needs to experience the joy of live dance.

RCB is currently governed by a 15-member board of directors. The organization currently includes a full-time Managing Director, 12 company dancers and 6 apprentices contracted for 30 weeks per year, and part-time a Production Manager, Rehearsal Director, and Wardrobe Manager in addition to contracted production staff.

THE POSITION
Reporting to the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors, the Artistic Director (AD) will work in a shared leadership model with the Executive Director/Managing Director (ED/MD) and is responsible for conceiving, developing, and implementing all aspects of RCB’s artistic vision. The AD will set a tone of innovation, collaboration, inclusion, and impact that will echo throughout the Finger Lakes region. Carrying primary responsibility for all artistic management functions of the company, the AD is tasked with establishing the artistic vision, preparing a company season and repertoire, and engaging with a diverse audience of all ages and backgrounds while ensuring fiscal sustainability. This dynamic director provides ethical, strategic, transparent, and values-centered leadership and is a self-starter with excellent communication, project management, and supervision skills.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Artistic Leadership & Programming

  • Conceive, plan, and develop a recognizable artistic identity and clear, compelling artistic vision for the company, inclusive of new voices and open to approaches to deliver the next phase of artistic growth and excellence.
  • Oversees program production, outreach program development and implementation in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Ensure recruitment and retention of a happy and high functioning artistic team.
  • Inspire, support, and develop RCB’s company of dancers, advocating for their best interests and honoring union agreements, while inviting their feedback and respecting their individuality and unique talents.
  • Maintain a visible, consistent, and welcoming presence in the studio by directing, teaching, and supervising classes and rehearsals.
  • Support the Marketing and Communications efforts by providing artistic input for marketing materials and images that represent RCB’s artistic work and brand.
  • Together with the ED/MD, oversee Education and Community Engagement programs, supporting the continued growth of community participation throughout the region.
  • Create original choreographed works during the season, as appropriate and as needed consistent with the approved operating and strategic plan.
  • Participate in developing partnerships with other arts and community organizations to advance RCB’s outreach activities and collaborative partnerships throughout the Finger Lakes region.

Fundraising & Resource Development

  • Partner with the ED/MD, Board, and others to inspire financial support for RCB through philanthropy and innovative partnerships.
  • Identify and cultivate new funding sources and maintain and nurture existing community, foundation, and individual donor relationships.
  • Support ED/MD in supplying narratives for grant proposals, identifying prospects, and subsequent fundraising appeals as needed.
  • Cooperate with the Board and committees in planning and implementing fundraising activities and events.

Community Engagement & External Communication

  • Works with the ED/MD and the Board to develop strategies which will effectively communicate RCB’s mission to various individuals and institutions to maximize visibility and earned and contributed revenues.
  • Act as a visible, inspiring spokesperson and advocate for RCB, engaging with the broader community including funders, donors, sponsors, civic leaders, community partners, audience members, and more.
  • Build local, regional, and national awareness of RCB and strengthen its brand and reputation with artists, media, and funders by participating in press interviews and other media appearances, cultivating strong professional and artistic relationships outside the region, and collaborating with local arts organizations across creative disciplines to develop new and mutually beneficial strategic partnerships.

      QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

      In Addition, the position requires excellence and experience in the following areas:

      • Demonstrating artistic excellence as a choreographer and artistic curator.
      • Confidence balanced with self-awareness and humility; possesses strong empathy, a keen sense of humor and kindness; makes others feel welcome, heard, and at ease.
      • Strong leadership and the aptitude to organize and influence individuals to believe in RCB’s vision.
      • The dexterity to modify, adapt, and be flexible to change with minimal resistance.
      • The disposition to handle difficult or sensitive issues effectively and hold themselves and others personally accountable to their actions.
